Website Analysis

In this Blog post, I will be briefly breaking down and analysing two  E-commerce websites which follow the C2C and B2C models, respectively.

1) Udemy

This is the home-page of the Udemy site.

By clicking right click on a blank area on the site and then heading over to the 'View page source' button, the website's source will be visible.
On the beginning of the <head> tag, the title tag is noticeable which is responsible for the title of a site as shown below.

The rest of the code seems slightly chaotic so an HTML reformatter will be used to increase the clarity and readability of the page source.

Below is the code after copying it into a formatter, which clearly made it more readable.
Here the meta-tags are visible which contains the description of the site as seen below '</script>'; that is "Udemy is an online learning and...".

So to look further into the source of the page, the inspect element feature from Chrome is going to be used. Upon inspecting, the widget on the very top of the site is seen to be called a smart bar and is within the Body tag.

Header

Moreover, falling under the body tag, this is an image banner. The body tag contains a variety of stuff on the site; for instance, this Udemy website has the following in its body tag :
  • Categories
  • Container containing purchasable courses
  • Top+Featured categories
  • Invite to start teaching
  • Companies trusted by the site

Finally, this is the footer section of the site where it has a lot of hyperlink buttons which the most notable ones are :

  • Link to the app
  • Contact link
  • Available careers
  • Help and Support
  • Privacy policy
  • Cookie settings
  • Language settings
  • Copyright and logo

2) ASDA

The next site is ASDA, the groceries store available at 'https://groceries.asda.com/'to be precise.

This is how the websites' home-page looks like.

As done in the previous website, the websites' page source is going to be copied into an HTML reformatter to ease its readability. As shown below, the description of the site is at the meta on line 68, which is the visible description of the site.

After inspecting, the header falls under the body tag which contains the following elements :

  • Logo/title
  • Drop-down menu
  • Shopping Cart
  • Search bar

Below the header and the categories is the location checker and a small image banner highlighting the currently available offers which again falls under the body tag.

Right below it are the products which are held under the body tag as well.

At the very bottom of the site lies the footer section; this contains:
  • Logo
  • Store Locator
  • About page
  • Delivery features
  • Other related sites
  • Help and customer service
  • Social Media accounts
  • Website feedback
And below that includes the privacy policy of the site, site map and Cookie settings.

Comparison

Despite both being completely different E-commerce sites with different models and selling different products, both of them share some similar features and structure. For instance, both have mentioned the privacy policies and cookie settings, as well as both have a 'help and support' section.
