Search Engine Optimisation

What is SEO?

According to Hardwick(2020), "SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a website or webpage to increase the quantity and quality of its traffic from a search engine’s organic results."
In other words, SEO is a process used in web development to yield more organic search results increasing the web traffic to suit the developers, businesses or organisations needs.

How is SEO used?

The first important thing for Search Engine Optimisation is the meta tag, these hidden tags provide data about the search engine the user uses, as well as info on the page itself and the website visitors (Litsa, 2018). To further explain this, SEO involves researching the most and common searched keywords on search engines and narrowing it down to what the target audience searches for the most and then adding those keywords to meta-data in a site to increase the organic search results and traffic.

Litsa(2018) makes clear that there are six meta tags that may help improve a websites' optimisation; these are:
  • Title tag - Allows the previewing of the content the site contains.
  • Meta description - Allows the previewing of the description of what a page contains.
  • Robots meta tag - Allows the selection of which pages to be indexed or not.
  • Alt text - Allows the usage of text as an alternative in case an image does not load.
  • Canonical tag - Allows the prioritisation of similar pages to avoid duplicates.
  • Header tag - Allows the structuring of web pages which affects the user experience and ease the readability, as well as assist search engines in knowing the content it contains.
